'Kroos going nowhere' say Bayern

The German midfielder had been touted for a summer switch to Old Trafford but Rummenigge's quotes suggest Bayern will be offering him a new deal

Bayern Munich chairman Karl Heinz Rummenigge has claimed midfielder Toni Kroos will be staying at the club - damaging Manchester United's summer transfer hopes.

The German playmaker has been linked with a switch to Old Trafford, having seen his salary demands rejected by the European champions.

United were ready to swoop and reports suggested they would pay Kroos a staggering £250,0000-a-week to seal his signature.

However, a move now appears unlikely after Rummenigge claimed he was going to stay, ahead of Tuesday night's Champions League clash between the two sides.

The Bayern supremo told reporters: "Toni Kroos is sure to wear Bayern Munich's shirt next year."

Indications suggest the Bundesliga champions will now offer the 24-year-old a new contract to keep him at the Allianz Arena.

Giggs - We're not underdogs

Ryan Giggs was in bullish mood ahead of Manchester United’s clash with Bayern Munich on Tuesday, insisting no team relishes a trip to Old Trafford in the Champions League.

German champions Bayern are many people’s favourites not only to win this quarter-final, but to go on and retain the European trophy they claimed for a fifth time last May.

But Giggs’ message at Monday’s press conference was clear: the Reds are still a force to be reckoned with and will come out fighting.

Moyes relishing Bayern contest

David Moyes is looking forward to taking charge of arguably the biggest game of his managerial career so far as Manchester United prepare to face Bayern Munich.

United’s form has been below-par in the Barclays Premier League but, aside from the first-leg setback in the last round against Olympiacos, there have been some strong performances in the Champions League.

That gives Moyes plenty of heart going into Tuesday’s quarter-final clash against the reigning European champions at Old Trafford.

Mata's Monday Blog

Hi everyone!

I have enjoyed a relaxed Sunday, it’s been a nice day to take a breath and think things over. In football, and also in life, is good to put some distance every now and then, to take some perspective, because everything goes too fast. You should not fall into despair after losing one game or think you are the best after winning another one. Once the season ends it will be time to evaluate things, but I must admit that last Saturday in Old Trafford was a great joy.

Our win on Saturday was special because we went from 0-1 down to prove to ourselves all the things we are capable of. We know our position in the table is not what the club and the fans deserve, but we are working to improve it.

Tuesday is just a great day to consolidate that work although, as you know, I am cup-tied for the Champions League for the rest of the season. Bayern is a massive opponent, but United has never feared any rival. I will be supporting my team-mates from the stands once more. We are going to try to win the Champions League but Bayern is a superb squad. We must play a very good game in Old Trafford.

Unfortunately, Thiago Alcántara will miss the tie. He is a good footballer; we won together the under-21 Eurocup in Denmark in 2011, a tournament that brings me great memories. I hope Thiago recovers as soon as possible of the injury he suffered on Saturday.

I also want to send a big bug from here to Víctor Valdés, another team-mate with the national squad with whom I’ve shared one World Cup, one Eurocup and one Confederations Cup, plus many more official and friendly games. He is a great goalkeeper and he will keep proving it the next season, I’m sure.

After playing Bayern we will have another challenging game at Newcastle. St James’ Park is one of the biggest stadiums in the Premier League and a good place to try to improve our position in the table. I think the Premiership title, after these last results, is going to be decided between Liverpool and City.

Thank you once again for your support. Big hug!

Juan

Bring on Bayern - Moyes ready for Munich Challenge

The Red Devils have had endured a difficult domestic campaign but their Scottish boss is excited by the prospect of pitting his wits against Pep Guardiola

Moyes insists his Manchester United side are ready for the challenge of Bayern Munich in the Champions League following Saturday's 4-1 win over Aston Villa.

United claimed their first win in the league at home since January as goals from Juan Mata, Chicharito and two from Wayne Rooney ensured the hosts would come from behind to defeat Paul Lambert's side at Old Trafford.

And Moyes, who had earlier witnessed a plane fly over Old Trafford carrying a banner with the words 'Wrong One - Moyes Out', is now relishing Tuesday's meeting with Champions League favourites Bayern. He told BT Sport: "I'm really looking forward to it. The Champions League quarter-finals.

"At the start if you said we'd get to the quarters then great but we want to be in the semi-final and then the final. But we've got a big tough game against probably the best side around. But bring the challenge on and coming to old Trafford is not easy for any side.

"I've been saying all the time I've been here the crowd have been great. We didn't start well but the crowd were great. Every fan I bump into they tell me they know exactly what it's like at Man United.

"The fourth goal is the type I've been looking to score. Adnan [Januzaj] weaving away and it was a great cross. You want to be excited by the football you see and the fourth goal excited me."

On Rooney, Moyes added: "He's a top player and he's been great since the start of the season. I said after the game if you keep scoring two goals a game then it's going to give us a great chance of doing much better. His form and the way he's playing has been great."

Moyes also hailed Mata's performance after the playmaker scored his first goal for the club since becoming the club's record signing after joining from Chelsea in January. He continued: "Everyone knows what he's capable of but he needed a goal because it's a big part of his game and it's a reason we signed him because he scores goals.

"He's been instrumental in a lot of our good play and I think he's played really well in recent weeks.

"I took over from Sir Alex a great team who were champions. But we need to add to it. All the players I seem to talk to are really keen to join Manchester United let's hope it comes to fruition in the summer time."

Mata's Delight at Maiden Strike

Manchester United's record signing Juan Mata capped a fine personal display with a well-taken goal against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Saturday.

With the Reds already 2-1 up, United's playmaker-in-chief struck to secure a two-goal cushion just before the hour mark. It was his first for the club and afterwards he spoke to MUTV, expressing his glee after scoring for his new club in the 4-1 triumph.

“It feels very good, it's taken a few games but today was the day," the Spaniard commented. "I felt that it was coming and, thankfully, it was today. I feel very happy and very grateful to the fans who were supporting me in the game today.

"I will try to score as many as I can between now and the end of the season and hopefully it is the first of many in my Manchester United career."

Mata also moved to praise fellow goalscorer Wayne Rooney, not just for his contribution in front of goal, but also his all-round importance to this United side.

"He's doing very well for us, scores almost every game and is so passionate about playing for this club," Mata added. "I'm very happy for him and hopefully he can keep scoring until the end of the season."

"I really enjoyed linking up with him as we had spaces to play between their lines. I really like to play with him because he is top striker - he does everything up front."

United vs Villa - Match Review

On a day of planes and protests, United and David Moyes enjoy a comfortable afternoon at Old Trafford.

It wasn't quite all 'plane' sailing for United but the aerial anti-David Moyes protest was shot down in flames by a welcome Reds victory.

Bayern Munich won't exactly be quaking in their boots when they make their own flight into Manchester on Tuesday but after the misery of the derby against City and the subsequent in-house squabbling between fans over the merits of the 'Wrong One – Moyes Out' banner flown behind a plane paid for by a disgruntled bunch of followers at least there was something to cheer about.

When the first drone of the engines could be heard coming in from the direction of its base in Blackpool, Old Trafford looked to the skies and some booing broke out against the stunt.

Moyes, himself, took the unusual step of making his way to his seat in the dug out before the teams and it was a courageous decision that would show clearly if the home support was as strongly behind him as he believes is the case.

The Reds boss was vindicated as the stadium rose to applaud his walk down the pitchside and chanted his name.

Manchester United's Juan Mata frustrated by European ineligibility as he thanks fans

Juan Mata has admitted it will be difficult to watch Manchester United's UEFA Champions League quarter-final from the sidelines but believes the pressure will be on favourites Bayern Munich, while he has thanked the club's fans for their 'amazing' support and vowed to try and improve.

United's disappointing season continued with a 3-0 loss at home to local rivals Manchester City in midweek, but they have made it through to the last eight of European football's premier tournament and will face Bayern Munich in the first leg of their tie on Tuesday.

Moyes: I have support of fans

Manchester United manager David Moyes remains convinced he is the best man to lead the club forward, insisting he retained the support of the majority of club's fans ahead of the visit of Aston Villa.

A group of disgruntled United fans have clubbed together £840 to pay for a banner reading 'Wrong One - Moyes Out' to be flown above Old Trafford in the build-up to United's lunch-time kick-off against Aston Villa.

The message mocks a banner in the Stretford End which proclaims Moyes as 'The Chosen One' - a reference to the fact that Sir Alex Ferguson hand-picked Moyes to be his successor last summer.

The saga took another twist on Friday after it emerged that another banner, trailed from a different plane, will be flown over the stadium at the same time.

It is understood that a high-street bookmaker is behind the second banner. The bookmaker is refusing to reveal the message their plane will drag across the skies, but it is understood to not be favourable towards Moyes.

If those fans who paid for the fly-by thought their stunt would push Moyes towards resignation, they were wrong.
"All it has done is strengthened my resolve to get the job done right," a defiant United manager said. "I'm more driven to succeed than ever. "I want to change the position we're in just now. I really do believe we can do that."

Moyes warns of risks of burning out young United star

David Moyes insists he has had no choice but to scale back Adnan Januzaj's playing time in recent weeks.

Januzaj was one of the few players to shine during the first half of Moyes' debut season, but he has found himself out of the Manchester United first team of late.

The 19-year-old was an unused substitute against Olympiacos and West Ham while he did not even make the match day squad for Tuesday's Manchester derby. But Moyes fears he may burn the teenager out unless he gives him some rest as the midfielder has already played 29 times this season.

'Adnan has played an incredible amount of games for a 19-year-old,' the United boss said.
'We have to be mindful of that. We have seen signs in training that we have to be careful what we do with him.

'But he is a great talent. He is someone we know will go a long way at United. But we are just being careful with him. We have to do the right things and he has played a lot of football.'

Januzaj, who moved to United from Anderlecht in 2011, signed a new five-year contract at Old Trafford last October after he broke into the first team.

Statement regarding Moyes and the Plane Banner

Red Issue Main Forum Statement re: - Moyes Plane Banner

27/04/2014

To whom it may concern, The decision to fly a plane over Old Trafford bearing the slogan 'Wrong One: Moyes Out' is one borne out of acute frustration - frustration at the poor results, lack of fight on the pitch and the unavoidable signs that David Moyes isn't up to the highest standards required to manage Manchester United Football Club.

A significant proportion of Manchester United fans have had enough and unequivocally want David Moyes sacked. Further frustration has been created from the inaccurate perception that all Manchester United fans are behind David Moyes.

A banner erected by Stretford End flags, that dubs David Moyes the 'Chosen One' (ludicrously prematurely into his career at United), suggests that all Manchester United fans are supportive of Moyes which isn't accurate. The plane and banner which will fly over the stadium this Saturday attempts to directly counter this very unpopular banner with the words 'Wrong One' and the 'Moyes Out' wording is our statement of what a significant group of Manchester United fans want to happen next at our club.

This isn't a reaction because we aren't getting our own way in terms of winning games. There is neither sufficient time or space to list the unwanted records set by the club this season under Moyes stewardship. We cannot have a manager who thinks it is acceptable to call our major rivals "favourites" when they play us at Old Trafford. It is a betrayal of the club's ethos, a betrayal of the players and a betrayal of the fans support.

We want a manager who understands and embraces our attacking traditions and has a vision of confidence for the future, not a manager who seems to be completely disassociated and visibly uncomfortable with the fact that he is the manager of Manchester United.

The plane is due to fly over the stadium 10 minutes prior to KO and for the first 5 minutes of the game.

Today's Press Conference - Aston Villa

Moyes on the 'Plane' and more importantly 'Aston Villa'

Moyes determined to prove flyover fans wrong and lead club back to former glory
David Moyes has said that the flyover stunt planned by Manchester United fans has made him and his squad more determined to succeed.

Supporters are planning to fly a plane over Old Trafford during United's match with Aston Villa on Saturday, bearing the slogan 'Wrong One - Moyes Out.'

Speaking at his Friday press conference the Scot said: 'I have heard of it [plane stunt] and what they're saying about it. People can do that. They are entitled to do that. It's a long journey
here and this is just the start of the journey.'

Moyes has faced fresh criticism after his team's poor performance in the 3-0 derby defeat to title-chasing Manchester City.

'We didn't play well in midweek and it was disappointing,' he added. 'We played well against Olympiakos and West Ham.

'The players know exactly what it is to play for Manchester United. They know the standards they have to set.

'They are hurting as well as me, they are desperate to put it right and we hope they can show that against Aston Villa.'

Despite facing calls from supporters to step down after less than a season in charge, Moyes has backed himself to get through this period of transition and take the club back to its former glory.

'I'm more driven to succeed than ever. I want to change this position we're in now and I really believe we can do this.

'We've got a great club with the players we can attract, it's just going to take a little time to get sorted.

'But I understand results are what matter. The business is results driven and I'm keen to get those results to make sure we move up the table.'

Plane Banner - Why? Not in our name!

This whole plane flying over Old Trafford tomorrow in protest to Moyes is embarrassing to say the least, this is not what the majority of United fans want, whilst is fair to say they would see him gone given the opportunity, this is not how it should be done, it's not the 'United Way'.

There's been plenty opportunity this season for the fans to boo and jeer during some of our pathetic performances, but one thing that sets us apart from most is we don't do that in the ground, we are there to support the team, look recently at the Liverpool and City games, losing both comprehensively, yet we continued to sing.

Here are a tiny example of the Tweets about the plane:

@baileymufc20: We're man utd & we don't sack managers but what we do is hire a plane to fly a moyes out banner over old Trafford.. Fucking pathetic Cunts
@carrick_fan: I don't want to associate myself with the United ''fans'' who made the plane banner
@KevinAshford7: I'm not David Moyes' biggest fan, but I fail to see what good will come of putting a plane up in the sky pulling a 'Wrong One' banner?
@LiamBerrySLF: United fans hiring a plane to fly over OT with a banner saying "Moyes out" complete and utter wankers.
@KKeeton_: This Moyes out banner is just plane stupid.
@Giggsy4ever: So our fans are really doing this plane banner? Not cool guys
@SiWood86: Plane banner?! Get a fucking grip lads!
@CSM0611: This plane banner is no different than the chosen one banner. Put up by an elitist, publicity seeking minority claiming to speak for us all.

Ferdinand: No Fear of Retirement

Man Utd’s First Move? Moyes Closing In On Majestic Cut-Price South American

Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Ezequiel Garay as the first installment of their major summer shake-up at Old Trafford, according to the Mirror.

United are preparing a summer transfer kitty of over £150 million to revitalise their squad after defeat to Manchester City left them nursing their tenth defeat of the season and on course to record their lowest ever points tally in the Premier League.

Garay has made it clear he wishes to move on from Benfica and test himself in a more prominent league, and with just one year left on his contract with the Portuguese giants, they are looking to sell him this summer in order to recoup some transfer fee,

United have made defensive reinforcements a priority for the close season, with captain Nemanja Vidic having signed a pre-contract agreement to join Inter Milan when his deal at Old Trafford expires in the summer.

Rio Ferdinand is also expected to retire from football at the end of the season, while there are still question marks over whether Chris Smalling is suitable for a regular central defensive role.

United are hoping to get a deal done for the defender before he jets off to the World Cup with Argentina in June, but will face competition from neighbours Manchester City and Zenit St Petersburg.

Robbie Savage: I've changed my mind about David Moyes, he's NOT up to it

Some jobs are just too big, or are square peg/round hole; the Scot looks a pale, frightened man, consumed by the pressure - enough is enough

With heavy heart, but few alternatives, I’ve changed my mind about David Moyes.

After the abject home defeat by Liverpool, where Manchester United were lucky it wasn’t five or six instead of 0-3, this week's clueless display in the derby against City was one humiliation too many at Old Trafford.

All the way along, I’ve stuck with Moyes because I like the bloke, he’s a terrific man and I believed he deserved a chance to build his own dynasty.

But in football some jobs are just too big, or they are the wrong fit.

Just as Roy Hodgson never quite clicked at Liverpool, I fear Moyes and United might be destined to remain square peg and round hole.

Neville Confirms Manchester United Wanted to Sign Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale in the Summer

Manchester United wanted to sign both Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale in the summer transfer window, according to Gary Neville.

David Moyes failed to recruit a number of key targets before the transfer deadline, including Cesc Fabregas and Leighton Baines, but only Marouane Fellaini arrived before deadline day.

According to Neville, there had been even more prominent names on the David Moyes's transfer list including world record signing Gareth Bale, who left Spurs for Real Madrid was among them as was Santiago Bernabeu teammate Ronaldo, a former Old Trafford star.

"In the summer, they wanted players of the quality of Fabregas, Bale, Baines and Ronaldo" said the former Manchester United captain. “They didn’t end up getting them and that was the problem.”

The club are now expected to invest heavily in players in the next transfer window and it would appear that Scotsman Moyes will be the man in command of the transfer kitty as the United board, including legends such as Paul Scholes, have backed the 50-year-old to stay in charge for years to come.

United have been strongly linked in recent weeks with the acquisition of Marco Reus, Luke Shaw and IIkay Gundogan, but the Old Trafford faithful will be devastated that they missed out on Ronaldo and Bale.

Welbeck part of deal to bring in Barkley from Everton

Manchester United might be willing to offer Everton target Danny Welbeck to the Toffees in a bid to land Ross Barkley.

The England midfielder scored a superb solo goal against Newcastle United on Tuesday night, further enhancing his reputation as one of the country's most exciting young talents.

United were linked with the 20-year-old back in the summer, but focused their attention instead on his then-team mate Marouane Fellaini, but it is thought that David Moyes could be set to try another raid on his old club.

Manchester City have also shown a strong interest in signing Barkley, who will no doubt command a hefty transfer fee, but United are hopeful that Everton's interest in Welbeck can give them some edge in pushing a deal through.

Welbeck has been in and out of the United starting lineup this season, and may find himself further down the pecking order next year if the Red Devils manage to bring in some much-needed big-name signings this summer, so the 23-year-old may too be open to a switch elsewhere.

The Toffees are on the lookout for new strikers as they are set to see loan stars Romelu Lukaku and Lacina Traore return to their parent clubs at the end of the season, and may see a cash-plus-Welbeck deal as good business even if it meant losing their star asset in Barkley.

Gary Neville - Unsung Hero Is Man Utd’s Player Of The Season

It’s been difficult to find much to shout about for Manchester United fans this season, if it wasn’t for the Champions League run it’s safe to say there’d be nothing whatsoever to quell their anger.

Collectively the side hasn’t so much under performed as completely failed to turn up and it’s now getting to the point where one good game from someone makes them a contender for player of the season.

While that may sound a little harsh, you only have to look at the results against Liverpool and Manchester City to notice how the entire team in both games had nothing to be proud of, well all but one of them anyway.

United rubbish reports that Glazers have lost interest

It was reported today that David Beckham and his Class of 92 teammates, including the Nevilles, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, and Paul Scholes, were being used to front a takeover bid bankrolled by the Qatari royal family.

The Glazers - who have a 90% stake in the club - were said to have lost interest in running United, with a source quoted as saying that "everybody knows the club is effectively for sale".

But a club source told M.E.N Sport that there was no truth to the claims that the Glazer brothers have lost interest or are keen to sell.

Salford bookmaker Fred Done was also reported by The Sun to have been contacted about the takeover but M.E.N Sport understands that this is not the case.

The Sun reported that Middle East bidders have approached the Glazers several times about a deal and that the only sticking point was price.

It also claimed that Gary Neville - who opened Cafe Football with Giggs in 2013 - is the brains behind the idea.

Salford '92 and Paul Scholes as manager? Neville and Giggs set to complete deal for non-league club

Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs are set to complete a takeover of Salford City within days in a move that may see the club renamed Salford 92 and Paul Scholes appointed manager.

M.E.N. Sport revealed last month that the pair of United legends were in talks to buy the non-league outfit last month.

We have now learned that the deal is expected to be signed off shortly – with a target of Championship football within 15 years part of an astonishing masterplan.

Scholes is already heavily involved in the project along with Phil Neville and Nicky Butt and will be part of talks next month aimed at staging first-team games at the AJ Bell stadium rather than at their Moor Lane home.

5 things we've learnt from the Derby defeat [ManchesterEveningNews]

Missing in action

What has happened to this team that walked the Premier League last season? Yes, other clubs have improved but that does not account for the chasm in quality that has existed between the Reds and the top sides this campaign. 3-0 flattered United, which goes some way to underlining just how poor they are.

Moyes gambles and loses

The Reds boss raised eyebrows on Saturday against West Ham when he made six changes from the Olympiacos win and stuck Michael Carrick at centre-back. The doubts proved wrong as United scored an easy win. Sir Alex Ferguson was known to spring surprises in big games and a three-man midfield including Tom Cleverley and Marouane Fellaini to stop City was certainly bold. This time, it looked naive as United enjoyed barely any control of the game.

United paying price for underinvestment...

How the Reds were allowed to go into this season with Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic still as first choice is a mystery. Evra has been exposed horribly in recent weeks for his lack of pace as the toll of playing every game punishes him, while Paul Scholes put it best about Rio when he said post-match: "What a defender he was." City ran riot against the United backline at the Eithad and did exactly the same last night.

...and poor investment

What impact did United's £70m of signings make last night? One should have been sent off and the other was anonymous other than missing the best chance for the Reds. moyes himself has said that the players are not worth that money in an inflated market but the money has still been sent. If £70m goes that far, the '£100m war chest' that has been promised will not stretch much further.

United still have leaders, and quality

The one saving grace for the team is that they do still have strength at both ends of the pitch. Wayne Rooney tried everything to keep his side in the game and is sounding increasingly like a captain off it, while David De Gea's best season yet for the club continues. It was a strong move by Moyes and Ed Woodward in January to tie down their top striker and would be well advised to do the same with their goalkeeper.

Quotes in the aftermatch of the derby defeat

Tuesday 25 March 2014

United 0-3 City - Is the Writing on the Wall?

The loss to Liverpool felt bad enough, but after the Olympiacos victory, then West Ham many were feeling positive for the remainder of the season.

Tonight however brought everyone back down to earth, it showed that United haven't got it: no grit, no determination, no tactical awareness, no ideas and no fight, even the challenge against our 'noisy neighbours' couldn't inspire them.

Is it the ageing squad or is it Moyes? To me its both, but mostly Moyes, he isnt a United Manager, he never sounds like he believes in what he can do, his interviews are a prime example - he always has little sound bites,  but they don't convince anyone, he always says 'were gonna try' or 'we'll make it difficult' - this isn't what United Manager's are supposed to say, it doesn't inspire confidence in the players, quite simply he has to go before he's given the reported £150m to spend (waste) in the summer.

2 more examples of quotes from tonight's interview from Moyes, could never imagine Ferguson saying this!
"Until the second goal we were still in it." [At 56 minutes, is this really the time to give up on chasing a 2-0 scoreline]
"I think we have played a very good side, playing at the sort of level we are aspiring to."

#FavoriteDerbyDayPhotos

In 24 hours we will know the result of the derby game, whilst saying we want a United win is a no brainer, we also want a continuation of the play we've managed recently.

We need to compete, be a threat and put city on the back foot, we can't afford another 6-1 drubbing, it will banish all our recently gained confidence for the remainder of the season so shortly after the Liverpool loss.

Here's a collage of my #FavoriteDerbyDayPhotos

Let's hope we have some more to add to it tomorrow.

Rooney Analysis against WHU from ManUtd.com

Rooney takes on the 'Corner Challenge' and speaks about Mata (Video)

Fresh from his stunning goal at West Ham United on Saturday Night Football, Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has delivered another impressive display.

The England international was the fifth player from his club to take on the bwin corner kick challenge and, although he could not quite match the huge totals posted by team-mates Michael Carrick and Juan Mata, he showed why he is a superstar.

Rooney got off to a flying start, finding the maximum 75 points with his first attempt. Knowing that Mata had set an intimidating 200-point target, the forward then decided to go for broke - constantly targeting the 75-point net.

Following several agonisingly close attempts, Rooney had to settle for 120 points and third place behind Carrick (150 points) and challenge leader Mata. A smiling Rooney was a touch disappointed, but joked of his relief at beating Old Trafford goalkeeper David De Gea.

After completing the challenge, Rooney, who will hope to take his good form into Tuesday's Manchester derby spoke exclusively to bwin and began by singing the praises of Mata.
"He is a fantastic player, experienced in the Premier League and you can see his qualities. He creates goals, he scores goals and he is a very nice person, too."
Rooney also spoke of his love for boxing and named Floyd Mayweather Jr as his favourite non-football sportsperson.

"He is unbeaten and he is so dedicated to being the best at the job, so I think he is the sportsman I admire most. I like golf, too, but, when I have got a bit of spare time, I will do a bit of boxing and really enjoy it."
Meanwhile, despite being one of Manchester United and England's most complete football players, Rooney is still humble about his talent, giving credit to the attributes of players around him. He said:
"There are a lot of players with more skill than I have, but most of all I would love to have the pace of Antonio Valencia."

Mata's Monday Blog

Hi everyone,

As you can imagine, today I’m very pleased about the two games we have played this week… We won both and that is really important; a boost of morale ahead of the next games! This is football and, whether you like it or not, you don’t get much time to enjoy the victories or mourn for defeats, so I think it is vital to remain mentally strong and focused on our goals.

That is how we are going to approach to the last stage of the Premiership. As if every game was a final. On my previous post I appealed to the winning spirit that has, historically, made United a big club, and I could experience that in situ on Wednesday night. It was a thrilling game, with the fans chanting and the team scoring goals to produce a great comeback and get into the quarter-finals.

And I realised that a Champions night in Old Trafford is different, as I had been told. With two goals in the first half -one of them just before the break- and one more after half-time we managed to get through and get confidence back. Obviously Robin played the leading role with his hat-trick but also, unfortunately, because he got injured. He is a key player for us and I hope he has a speedy recovery so he can help us in the last few games.

We have been drawn against Bayern Munich, which brings great memories here of the Champions won in Barcelona in 1999. We will have to ask Ryan Giggs about that game and what we can do to beat them! It’s going to be very tough, they are having an amazing streak in the Bundesliga and play very good football. They are a fantastic team and the favourites to win the title, but we will try to beat them and reach the semi-finals.

The week ended the same way after winning at West Ham, a game to be remembered for Rooney stunning goal from the halfway line. I was asking him for the ball, but I think he chose the right option… Spectacular Wayne! The team has got confidence and now there is an exciting challenge ahead: our derby against City on Tuesday. It will be the first one for me and I’m looking forward to it. You can already feel in the streets that special atmosphere.

Moreover, the next weekend we will play in Old Trafford again, this time Aston Villa. We must get better results at home; in the away games we are the best team so far.

In Spain, where the Champions League draw put Barça and Atlético together, everybody was waiting for the Clásico, even more after Atlético’s victory at the Villamarín. And it lived up to the expectations. What a superb match: great goals, frantic pace, intensity and, as it happens in this kind of games, controversy.

The fight for the title is absolutely exciting now after Barça’s win… From Real Madrid, Di María had a great performance, same as Benzema. From Barça, Iniesta (he is such a pleasure to watch) and Messi made all the difference with their goals.

Lastly, on another subject, I would like to recommend to you a documentary that I watched recently in a hotel on one of those nights before a match: “Jiro Dreams of Sushi”. Very good! If you like sushi as much as I do you will love it. And you will get hungry

Hugs to all of you, I wish you another great week!

Rooney 'Goal of the Season' - West Ham United

A great display from the team again today, some thought with the injury blow to RVP that United may return to the past poor performances of the season.

Some however including me hoped it would persuade Moyes to tinker some more with the lineup, pushing Rooney into the Strikers position this freeing the no10 for Mata.

Moyes actually went further and included Kagawa too in the 3 behind Rooney, the interchange worked very well, fluid movement and counter attacking was reminiscent of Utd from past years.

The game itself started in the best possible way, early chances flooded in before Rooney scored what many were calling the 'goal of the season'.

With the goal reminding so many of the famous Beckham goal against Wimbledon, how fitting was it be was in the crowd today, cameras caught his reaction to Rooney's goal.

Rooney went on to grab a 2nd goal, he didn't know quite a much about this one, with the ball smashing in of his legs from the defender's clearance, but he was in the right place at the right time.

Overall a pleasing performance, a clean sheet as a bonus too which was made even more impressive with the current lack of defender's United have available, underlined with Carrick playing as CB today

We're Man United, We'll do what we want' chanted by injured United defender Chris Smalling after he left bar at 3am

Crocked United star Chris Smalling left a bar at 3.15am today singing: “We’re Man United - we’ll do what we want!”

As his team-mates were tucked up in bed and getting some rest ahead of another crunch game, the 24-year-old defender was spotted coming out of a bar in Manchester’s Spinningfield district early on Saturday.

He showed no sign of the hamstring injury which has ruled him out for a month as he ran a short distance before getting a taxi, according to an eye-witness.

The player, who had clearly enjoyed his night, had been out with four friends including his brother.

Pictures show him with his arms outstretched as he and his pals sang one of United fans’ favourite songs: “We’ll do what we want. We’ll do what we want. We’re Man United. We’ll do what we want.”

His team-mates headed down to London on Friday to prepare for their Premier League match against West Ham tonight.

The eye-witness told the MEN: “He’d obviously had a great night with his mates. They were singing football songs.”

Earlier this week it was revealed he had suffered a hamstring injury and could be out of action for up to a month.

In January, Smalling apologised for his ‘insensitive’ decision to appear as a suicide bomber at a fancy-dress party.

He said at the time he was trying to make fun of the popular Jagerbomb drink by strapping bottles of Jagermeister and Red Bull to his body.

He had been pictured wearing an army-style vest decorated with booze bottles, a mock circuit board with cables attached as he wore what appeared to be an Arab head dress.

RVP Out for upto 6 weeks

David vs Goliath

The Champions League draw for the quarter finals is complete, there's been plenty of reaction to Utd being drawn against Bayern Munich.

Mostly is been resignation that United will have a massive task to get through over the 2 legs, Bayern are reigning champions, run away leaders in the bundesliga and with Pep Guardiola in charge, are playing supreme exciting football.

Here are a tiny sample of the tweets from Utd fans:

Plenty of fans are also drawing on our past meetings with Bayern, not least the 1999 final, but both teams are very different in contrasting ways from those teams.

More recent was the 4-4 match at the same stage in 2010, where a 74th minute Robben strike put them through on away goals, again even only 4 years ago the 2 teams were both different from today's.

Bayern have hit the crest of a wave, even beating Barcelona 7-0 on agg on the way to winning last year's competition. Bayern will clearly be favourites to get to the next stage, but football can and does throw up odd results.

Champions League victory over Olympiakos can be the turning point for United, says Rooney

Wayne Rooney claims Manchester United's Champions League fightback against Olympiakos was owed to beleaguered manager David Moyes by the club's under-performing players.

United overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit against the Greek champions to qualify for the quarter-finals following a hat-trick by Robin van Persie in Wednesday's 3-0 victory at Old Trafford.

With the win coming just three days after the 3-0 humiliation at home to Liverpool - a defeat which left Moyes's position in grave danger - United eased the mounting pressure on the former Everton manager.

Olympiacos Sorted - Onto erm...... Gulp

United overturned the 2-0 loss to Olympiacos with a terrific 3-0 win tonight at Old Trafford, winning the tie 3-2 on aggregate.

There were terrific performances all over the pitch from the Red Devils, a few standout from the rest, namely David De Gea with several world-class saves, Rooney and RVP linking up well looking like the partnership we witnessed last season, Welbeck with his pace on the wing constantly turning the greek defence around, along with Valencia who through an early challenge played most of the match with one eye closed, was a constant outlet.

The player head and shoulders above all the others though was Giggs, Utd had a player in the centre who looked to play a killer pass whenever possible, head up looking forwards, beating players, it's what we've missed for most if the season.

It does show that if we can get that marquee player in the centre, the likes of Kroos who's been linked so many times, then we can compete and play attractive attacking football again.

After the thrilling game tonight, I quickly realised that we now face a daunting last 8 tie with some top teams. If we really have turned a corner then we can look hopefully at the draw on Friday, however if it's another 'flash in the pan' like so many times then the ecstacy of tonight will quickly turn to dread of a possible cricket score.

Evra: United's future is more important than mine

The Frenchman is not interested in discussing the possibility of a summer exit, and is keen to help the Reds turn things around on the pitch instead.

Patrice Evra is adamant the uncertainty surrounding his Manchester United future will not effect his performances in the final months of the season.

The French full-back is out-of-contract at Old Trafford at the end of the season and has been linked with moves to Paris Saint-Germain, Monaco and Inter.

But the 32-year-old insists his only concern is helping United to salvage something from what is shaping up to be a disastrous season, starting with the Champions League last-16 second leg with Olympiacos at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
Evra said: “It is not a good day to talk about my future because the most important is Manchester United's future, not mine.

Vidic wants a'new challenge'

Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic says he is joining Inter Milan in the summer because he needs a new challenge.

Vidic joined the Red Devils in 2006 from Spartak Moscow for a fee of around £7million, going on to earn the captain's armband in the 2010-11 season.

The 32-year-old confirmed earlier in the campaign that he would not be entering talks with the Premier League champions over a new deal and he would instead be seeking a new club at the end of the term.

Italian giants Inter moved quickly to secure the former Serbia international and Vidic insists that he had to find a new club in order to try and take on a new challenge.

Vidic said: "At times you need to accept that fact that it's time for a change.
"It's time to fight for new targets and to face new challenges, that it what I want to do in Italy."

De Gea expects more from United

David De Gea accepts Manchester United were poor against Olympiacos three weeks ago but is expecting a much improved performance on Wednesday.

The Reds have work to do in the second leg of the Champions League last 16 tie against the Greek champions after falling to a tame 2-0 defeat in Athens.

But De Gea is confident that, with the right attacking approach, United can overturn that deficit and add another entry to the list of great European nights at Old Trafford.

"We know we didn’t play a good match in Greece," the goalkeeper told UEFA.com. "They were better than us and they won.

"But now there is the return leg at Old Trafford and I think that, with our fans behind us, we have to go onto the pitch and fight and attack from the first minute. By playing and pressing well, we still have a good chance.

"We will give everything we have and play a lot better than we did there. With the atmosphere and the team we have, we can succeed and hopefully reach the next round."

United manager David Moyes must also lift his players after the disappointing 2-0 Barclays Premier League defeat to Liverpool on Sunday, but De Gea believes the switch to playing in the Champions League is motivation in itself.

"They are different matches – it’s a knockout competition and you have to win the ties," said the Spaniard, who won the Europa League with Atletico Madrid in 2010.

"In those ties there are a lot of emotions involved. It takes forever for the matches to arrive and you can’t wait for them. And then you enjoy them and try to give your best. It’s a dream of mine to one day lift the Champions League trophy. It’s incomparable."
