De Gea: Critics were wrong

David De Gea was delighted his Manchester United team-mates could prove their critics wrong during Tuesday’s spirited 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich.

Many pundits had tipped Pep Guardiola’s side to demolish the Reds at Old Trafford and take a giant stride towards the Champions League semi-finals, a view that was shaped by the teams' contrasting fortunes in all competitions this season.

However, thanks to a performance of grit and determination, United upset the odds and secured a draw that keeps the tie well and truly alive ahead of next Wednesday’s second leg in Bavaria. Speaking after the match, De Gea was bullish about his side’s chances.

“We are satisfied and we feel that we showed a great match,” David told UEFA.com. “We put in a lot of effort against a tough opponent. We nearly got a victory as well. I think that we knew we had to defend well, close down the spaces and try to be dangerous on the counter. We produced clear chances and we showed a great match.

“This club is a big club. It is in difficult times when the team can show its strength and how big this club is. I am happy for that, for the people who thought it would be easy for Bayern. We played a great match and I am happy about that. I think there is still a chance. The result is a draw, the tie is still open and we will fight until the end.”

Kroos: Old Trafford is beautiful but I belong to Bayern

The German midfielder has been touted as a long-term target for David Moyes, but says he is happy where he is despite his admiration for the Reds' home.

Toni Kroos has spoken of his delight at getting the opportunity to play at Old Trafford but insists he is happy at Bayern Munich.

Kroos has yet to agree an extension to his deal with the German champions and is cutting it fine with his contract set to expire at the end of next summer.

United have subsequently been linked with a move for his services, with David Moyes keen to bolster his central midfield options.

However, after featuring in his side's 1-1 draw with the Reds, Kroos appeared to pour cold water on the idea of a Premier League switch.

He told Munich's TZ newspaper: "It (Old Trafford) is a beautiful stadium. But I belong to Bayern Munich and that's good."

Meanwhile, chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge added: "[Kroos] will certainly play at Bayern next year. What's beyond that, I don't know."

Kroos went on to opine that a draw was a fair result on the night, telling the club's official website: "It was a tough game. We dominated the match, but Man United gave their all and they were dangerous.

"We deserved the 1-1 draw at the end of the day. The result's okay. We've got every chance in the return game."
