Moyes watches on as Man United starlet Wilson scores another stunner [VINE]

Manchester United striker James Wilson added to his burgeoning reputation by scoring a 25-yard stunner in front of manager David Moyes on Monday night.

Wilson, who had earned a first call up to the first-team squad for Saturday's Premier League clash at Newcastle, opened the scoring in the Reds' Under 21 clash against Aston Villa.

The 18-year-old picked up the ball on the right edge of the box and drove inside before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the top corner in the 28th minute at OId Trafford.

Video: Mata analysis against Newcastle United [ManUtd]

Juan Mata enjoyed arguably his finest performance to date for Manchester United in Saturday’s 4-0 Barclays Premier League win at Newcastle United.

The Spaniard started in the no.10 role behind Javier Hernandez but was a ubiquitous presence at St James’ Park, bounding all over the field with style and grace.

After scoring two and making another for substitute Adnan Januzaj, Mata was named United’s Man of the Match, picking up a huge 75 per cent of the votes from fans on Twitter.

And former Reds forward Andy Ritchie added his own words of praise on MUTV’s post-match analysis programme, Big Match Debrief.

"Juan was all over the pitch – he popped up on the left, the right, in midfield and up front," Ritchie said. "He links play, he sees things and he knows where people are.

"He’s so hard to pick up and he needs to be in those pockets where he’s not in a physical battle because he isn’t the biggest or strongest of players.

"He wants the ball all the time and he has good control. So if you afford him space and time he can cause havoc."

Sir Alex on '99: How United bettered Bayern [Video]

The draw for the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals paired Manchester United FC with FC Bayern München, bringing back memories of a famous night 15 years ago.

All of the teams' nine previous meetings have been in Europe's top club competition, none more memorable than the 1999 showpiece when Sir Alex Ferguson's men struck twice in the 90th minute through substitutes Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær to overturn Mario Basler's opener and complete an unprecedented treble by an English side.

UEFA.com caught up with United's former manager – now the UEFA Coaching Ambassador – whose teams were famed throughout his 27-year reign at Old Trafford for a never-say-die attitude that produced unlikely comebacks aplenty. There is no finer example of this than that evening in Barcelona.

"You couldn't do it a better way because there was no comeback," said Sir Alex. "If you're going to do something special, doing so as late as that is fantastic. It wasn't an accident because that team did it so many times that season. They had a fantastic desire to win. They had a great team spirit, a great character about the team, and they deserved to win simply because they kept doing it."

That his sides were famed for such recoveries was not down to chance – Sir Alex and United never knew when they were beaten. He liked to gamble. He would rather give it a go, be bold and push men forward, than succumb meekly.

"Some of the greatest moments in my time at United have been in the last 15 minutes, without question," Sir Alex explained. "Say you're down 1-0 or 2-1, there's no point in being conservative and playing your normal game because it hasn't worked for 75 minutes. So risk and shove an extra player up front. We did that in the final against Bayern München with Solskjær, [Andrew] Cole and Sheringham."

Juan Mata takes a tour of the Manchester United Museum

Juan Mata took a recent visit to the Mecnhester United Museum to swot up on the club's history.

Having joined in January in a £37.1m deal from Chelsea, the Spaniard arrived at a time of discontent in the red half of Manchester.

With the club losing successive home Premier League games to their two greatest rivals Liverpool and Manchester City, a sense of gloom and frustration is growing around Old Trafford.

With the club seventh in the Premier League and facing Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, David Moyes look certain to end the season without any success.

Moyes can avoid another 'what if' moment with Fletcher

The Scotland midfielder was suspended for the 2009 Champions League final. But he's fit and available to face Bayern on Wednesday.

Most footballers can only dream of the career Darren Fletcher is having.

He's played more than 300 times for Manchester United. He's got five Premier League winners' medals, two League Cup winners' medals and an FA Cup winners' medal.

He's got one from the 2008 Champions League final - he was an unused substitute against Chelsea – and one from the FIFA Club World Cup final from the same year.

In 2010, he was voted into the PFA Premier League team of the Year.

But even with all that on his CV, he's still best remembered for one game he didn't play in. The 2009 Champions League final.

Evra expects to be fit for Bayern clash despite knock

The full-back had to be withdrawn against Newcastle but is confident of taking to the field in Munich, where he hopes to spring a "surprise"

Manchester United defender expects to be fit to face Bayern Munich in Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final second leg despite picking up a knock against Newcastle.

The French full-back, who has also been struggling with a knee problem, was withdrawn in the second half of Saturday's comprehensive 4-0 victory over the Magpies but is hopeful he can make the starting XI at the Allianz Arena.

Rooney makes it into Sunday's 'Team of the Day' - Despite not Playing

Wayne Rooney has been one of the key players keeping Manchester United's tough season on track, but his latest achievement, making The Sun's team of the week, might be his finest yet.

Rooney was included, presumably for his performance against Newcastle United—which, given he was out with a toe injury sustained in midweek and therefore didn't feature, let alone play.

Mata's Monday Blog

"Hi everyone:

The truth is, after a game like Saturday's, I realise once again how nice football can be, and how much you enjoy the few days following a victory and a good performance. I still have a smile on my face :-) To spend a relaxed Sunday knowing that you have done your job is priceless. And it was not an easy thing to do in St. James' Park, but the team delivered and we got three more points to keep this great streak on away games.

After the match I was very happy from a personal point of view; moreover, I was really pleased with the effort made by all players to win, and it's a key victory to try to climb on the table and to go to Germany full of confidence.

I scored and enjoyed on the pitch again; I wish the streak goes on until the end of the season. As I said after the game, I have a very good understanding with my team-mates and I was also very happy with Chicha and Adnan's goals.

By the way, you may wonder about my celebration with De Gea... The reason is that we had been practising free-kicks the day before and David said I was going to score against Newcastle... because that day I was misfiring all my shots! And so it happened :-)

This victory gives us a lot of energy for our game in Munich on Wednesday. In the first leg, the support from Old Trafford was our power to cope with such a tough game. It was a great night that I had to enjoy from the stands. On Wednesday I'll be supporting from home, in front of the TV, aware that the Allianz Arena is one of the toughest stadiums in Europe... but also aware that we are Manchester United and I'm sure we can make it through!

In Spain it seems the battle for the title will be thrilling until the very end. The top-three teams won, including Atlético, who had a complicated match, and Real Madrid, in a remarkable 0-4 in Anoeta, Real Sociedad's fortress. At this stage they all know that dropping one single point can make the difference and that is stressing... At the bottom of the table things are yet to be decided. In that regard, Elche's victory against Getafe was one of the main games of the weekend.

Last week I visited Lymm, a village full of historical buildings surrounded by canals. A perfect place to relax and forget about everything. Since we don't play the next weekend I may try another escape somewhere else. I invite you to make suggestions ;)

Once again, thank you very much for your support and for your recent messages. I read you! I hope I can keep my good streak!

Hugs!

Juan

Wayne Rooney winning fitness battle ahead of Bayern Munich

Wayne Rooney is understood to be winning his battle to recover from a badly bruised toe in time to face Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

The England striker picked up the injury during the 1-1 draw with Bayern on Tuesday and missed Manchester United's 4-0 win over Newcastle at the weekend.

Rooney was in Manchester doing work in the swimming pool in a bid to be fit for Wednesday's clash in the Allianz Arena.
