Manchester United might be willing to offer Everton target Danny Welbeck to the Toffees in a bid to land Ross Barkley.
The England midfielder scored a superb solo goal against Newcastle United on Tuesday night, further enhancing his reputation as one of the country's most exciting young talents.
United were linked with the 20-year-old back in the summer, but focused their attention instead on his then-team mate Marouane Fellaini, but it is thought that David Moyes could be set to try another raid on his old club.
Manchester City have also shown a strong interest in signing Barkley, who will no doubt command a hefty transfer fee, but United are hopeful that Everton's interest in Welbeck can give them some edge in pushing a deal through.
Welbeck has been in and out of the United starting lineup this season, and may find himself further down the pecking order next year if the Red Devils manage to bring in some much-needed big-name signings this summer, so the 23-year-old may too be open to a switch elsewhere.
The Toffees are on the lookout for new strikers as they are set to see loan stars Romelu Lukaku and Lacina Traore return to their parent clubs at the end of the season, and may see a cash-plus-Welbeck deal as good business even if it meant losing their star asset in Barkley.
